What do I do? I need life advice

As above you may be fine with an inch.. I'm mostly paranoid and try to avoid problems down the road.

Try starting with that, add some if you start to have green water or cloudy water issues.. and if you do, pull crypts and swords up (or similar) so the crown is not buried.

If you get green water or cloudy water, it is a likely sign that the cap is insufficient and the nutrients from the soil, or the soil itself, are getting to the water.. to make dirty water or algae.

You should add sand to the cap where it is too thin, and if applicable pull up plants do they will grow correctly..
