what do i need for my 55 gallon for peacock cichlids

A plain dark colored background: dark blue or black, IMHO.

You can buy crushed coral at your lfs, it's used for SW tanks as well. Peacocks aren't quite as rock-oriented as mbuna, though it is certainly a good idea to have plenty of suitable size caves available for fish to take cover in if necessary. If you prefer a sand substrate crushed coral or aragonite can be placed in a filter (hob or canister) to buffer the water.

Hello All
I notice that my peacocks sifting sand alot and also digging under the massive rocks I have in the tank. Is that normal behavior? I live in Illinois, have a pretty high ph and do weekly water changes.. They seem happy lol, I just want to make sure..
Also - someone mentioned a good place to buy rocks in the Chicagoland area.. Would you mind telling me? Im looking to replace the limestone boulders I have in there (60 gal tank) with something hopefully a little lighter and not as sharp (a couple have cut themselves)

Thanks in Advance for your advice!!

Sifting sand is normal behavior of African cichlids.. They do it for food or digging a pit to impress the ladies..

I'd just throw in my 2 cents here: Don't go too crazy with the rockwork. You want to provide shelter for subdom males and females, but Peacocks mostly inhabit open areas of water and need plenty of swimming space.
