what do you all think?!

I'm so jealous, here in Cali I don't qualify for any of the necessary permits to keep caimen. I have no experience, but wish you good luck!

Sounds like you're experienced and know exactly what's going to happen (size, dietary demands, etc.) I for one think if you're going to pond, this is the optimal stock :D

The pond enclosure (even if aboveground) needs careful thought as these guys are very good escape artists. A local herp guy here had a younger specimen escape by flinging himself over plexiglass. He launched from a piece of tall driftwood in the center of the enclosure = 10 ft.... pretty impressive for a 3.5 ft. long cold blood LOL. Any neighborhood or zoning problems where you live for housing this guy outside?

I have worked with large 5 foot camain and I personally recommend against it. they are difficult animals to work with and in the end, they are hard to re home. Not to many places will take them from you and if they do, its at your cost for the shipping and handling of a large animal.

I would just stick to the snakes, they are far easier to care for in the long run. But if you do venture into these guys, there is a fantastic article on building a caging for them in the recent Reptiles magazine (i would say in the last 2-3 months.)

Well he can hope that he gets a female. 50/50 chance with that! :D

Problem with getting an animal like this, he will need to check his local laws. Some Cities, Townships and Counties ban these animals.
To many these are dangerous animals and Caiman at 5 feet can cause a person some serious damage as well.
