what do you clean with?

I use a bucket, and I will continue to use a bucket, at least until I get my 135g next year. Then, I will have to buy a Python, or my back is gonna give out trying to carry 20+ 5g buckets of water back and forth.

My only issue with the Python, is how am I supposed to treat my water for chlorine and chloromines if I am pumping it directly into the tank? Also, how do I ensure the temp is correct? I dont know about you other guys with Pythons, but where I live in the winter, the tap water gets down into the 50s in the winter. The idea of pumping 53F water into a tropical tank scares the heck outta me, same with pumping 110F from accidently turning the hot up too high. Just my two cents.

P.S. I also have half a dozen fish that cost around $15 a piece, so I seriously dont want to risk killing them.

Tempering the water at the tap before switching it over to send it to the tank is standard practice.

Adding the chlorine or chloramine treatment before adding the water to the tank, or adding it as the new water is added to the tank are also pretty standard.

Water treatment chemicals react very quickly to chlorine and chloramine, correct? And you're also stirring up the water with the Python when you fill, so the agitation helps out, as I recall.

I don't put the water directly back in the tank with the python. Sometimes the water company shocks their system and chlorine/chloramines are very elevated, so I pre-treat in a 200 gallon tank and pump into the aquaria after testing my water. I have a similar set up to RTR's.

I do the old fashioned hand siphon and bucket-lug. It's good exercise. ;)

I used to do the bucket brigade too, Red K. I'm gettin' too old for that now. Just reading your post makes my back hurt. :p:

First thing I'll buy when I go back to work in the summer: a Python system.

Water changes are a pain for me, and I always end up with a puddle on the floor in my room at the end of it all, no matter how careful I am. I don't even have any buckets in the house, so I'm stuck using four Tupperware containers and a juice pitcher thing. >_<

I have been using the hose and bucket for my 55 gal, but weekly 50% water changes are becoming a very big pain this way....not to mention the fact I have an 18 month old son that really really likes to get in the way during this process. I am going to be looking into the python.
