what do you do when you go on vacation?

When I go on vacation for more than 3 days then I usually employ my brother-in-law to come by and take care of it. He has a 75 gallon FOWLR so he is familiar with what to do most of the time.

If it is 3 days or less I don't have him come over, the fish can go that long by scavenging around the tank and the corals, IME, will be fine for a weekend.

I take small plastic bathroom cups the size of a shot glass and put the food portions in them and write the date on the cups that they are to be dumped in the tank. This way I know the tank is not being over fed. I leave very specific instructions that if a day is missed - do not dump in two to make up for it. I tell who ever is watching my tank that too much food will kill everything just to scare them into not adding anything additional.

I also will leave a 2 gallon jug of RO freshwater next to the tank and have them pour into the tank to a count of five seconds for top offs (about right for me every couple of days).

I also have a battery operated airstone that I leave next to the tank to be used if power is lost in my house. The airstone tube is precut, so that it can only go in the water a couple of inches for gas exchange.

Then, I HOPE!
