What do you think about wave makers?

Do you already have power heads? If they are the prop type you can't use a on/off wave maker. You need a variable speed wave maker. Otherwise the power heads will not last due to the banging of the prop when it starts up.
I see the advantages to a wave maker, but watching the torch in my tank you can tell there is varying currents without a wave maker.
