After receiving reports that my last shipment had some DOAs, I decided to take a closer look at the 10g the fish came from. The tank has always "looked cloudy" due the fact that I grow algae on the walls for my snails and otos, but I noticed that the water itself was cloudy. Upon closer inspection, I could see tiny particles flying through the water - at first I thought it was just sand debris kicked up by the filter, but after taking a water sample out, I noticed that the particles were still moving by themselves. And I just have no clue what it is.

I took a photo, but it probably isn't of much help. The vial itself is only 3/4", the particles are smaller than a brine shrimp egg.

I also shot a video as well as I could, but again, probably not of much help

They don't seem to be effecting any fish or inverts in the tank.

Answers, clues, ideas, theories are all welcome.

You know, I haven't looked lately, but I believe I've had something like that before. I don't think it affected my fish, so I haven't worried much about it.

I wonder what it is.

It is a mystery.. there's enough of them in my tank to make the water cloudy and a 50% water change doesn't seem to have impacted their numbers.

While it doesn't seem to be effecting anything in the tank, I do wonder if it's what caused the DOAs, since those fish would've been more vulnerable than ones in a filtered tank with proper volume.

Probably not. I've had copepods before, these don't look like it, but since they're so small, they basically look like an extremely tiny bubble to me and I can't tell if it has a more definitive body shape.

maybe they're just microscopic creatures that you see in everybody of water, like the ones you see in biology where the professors make you look at them in pond water with microscopes, the only way you're probably seeing them now is like dust in light

I would suggest taking something clear, and putting whatever water you are using for water changes in it. The little things that were in my tank water were also in my tap water, so maybe it's something in your water, too?

Tap water is clear. The effected tank is the only one that has them.

Ah, well then I guess it's different. Hope you find out what they are.

Still puzzling. I did some Googling earlier and did manage to find a number of people who had the same problem, but those were without any conclusive answer or solution as well. Bacterial bloom seemed to be most common answer, though never having had one of those to compare this to, I'm not sure..

I also took out several water samples last night, treating one with carbon and another with Accu-clear, either has had any effect. Another 50% water change earlier today also doesn't seem like it has done anything.
