:) Hi guys. Im setting up a 65 gal 1200cm by 450cm by 450cm semi reef aquarium. My equipment are the following. 65 gal with 65 gal sump. I bought a Via Aqua SK 388 skimmer which is gonna sit in my sump accompanied by 3 compartments containing bio balls, ceramic stones and some filter sponge. I'm going to use a T5 lighting system from hopar containing 4 units, 2 blue and 2 white, 28 watts per unit. Substrate is the only thing i havent sorted yet. I was thinking about ragonite instead of crushed coral, it just looks so much better. Live sand is too hard to get hold of. Anyway what do you guys think. any suggestions are welcome.:)
 
definatly use argonite over crushed coral. it is 100X better. and most live sand you will buy (except for a few places online) is nothing but sand in dirty water with some bacteria. you will have the same thing after a few weeks at 1/8th the price.
you do know that your lighting system is a freshwater setup right?
 
:confused: Why would the lighting be for a fresh water setup? I think it should be fine, besides im only gonna keep med light corals. My LFS sold the light to me instead of metal halide. besides it being more expensive, metal halide gives off alot of heat because of the high wattage. I know that halides are most probably the best option but the T5 should be sufficient. Anyway thanks for the reply:)

Lights of the same type are not made for either freshwater or saltwater. They are the same ballasts, reflectors, etc. just different bulbs are commonly used for the two types of aquariums. Even if a lighting unit is labeled for freshwater by the manufacturer, there is absolutely no reason that it can't/shouldn't be used over a salty setup.
 
Hi guys, picked up my tanks today. looks good. im planning on setting it up this weekend. Cant wait really. Im gonna take it slow, it being my second tank. (ive been through the whole impulsive stocking thing with first tank) ill keep you posted on progression.:)

i know. it is jsut more commonly used in freshwater. sorry. i worded taht incorrectly. i didnt mean it was only for freshwater tanks, i jsut wanted to make sure that the poster knew that the lights were not the T5 HO lights since he said it was goign to be a reef. you are going to be able to keep more healthy than youw ould with normal NO lighting, but still not a lot. and since he said it was going to be a reef, i just wanted to make sure he/she knew they were different than the HO units. sorry.... i know what i meant was almost a completly different track than what i said. haha
