what does a skimmer do???

With a heavy bioload I would. You don't need one Tank, but once you see what it pulls out of your water you'll be glad you got it. If you aren't having any problems presently I can see where you would be tempted to forgo one however.

yes I do but it would not work it would put out to much very watery foam and just overflow. I think that the water level in the sump is lower than the water in the skimmer and I think they have to be close to the same. I have a plan to solve this problem but wanted to know if I rally need one or not.

I agree. I left my skimmer off for a week, put it back on and after 3 days emptied the black- green $h1t from it. Id say a skimmer works for me. Just makes me feel better when i see what it takes out of perfectly clear water. weird when you think about it at first.:)

Skimmer takes out a lot more than just dissolved proteins, hey all that crap that is in your cup at the end of a couple of days if you didn't skim is still in your tank, but I bet if you chucked the stuff from the cup back in it would be a different story... mainly because it is now dead stuff.

I would always recommend skimming especially as I don't understand your tank setup.

Well my concern is weather it's better to draw the water before it's filtered or can you put the pump after it's been filtered? I can put the pump in the intake part but the hose will be about 4' long I can only out the skimmer on the outlet side.
