What does it take to survive

Thanks for the responses. I have to have Bass. I really like them and their personalities.

I Guess I will now have to search craigslist for a bigger tank.

I know Bass eat anything they can get their mouth around. Heck i have caught bass that my lure was as big if not bigger than they were.

Last- and I'm sure its a dumb question but i do have to get rid of the algae/sucker fish or he'll be lunch correct?
And it looks like he had already decided NOT to put it in a 55.So from this point on, the conversation was no longer about tank size.

Not in a 55 gallon...you could most certainly do larger fish than a bass, but how many people actually have tanks that support those fish? Barely any.
From that comment,it sounds like maybe you should look in the photo gallery here, also try MonsterFishKeepers, and YouTube for that matter.Keeping very large fish,in very large tanks,is a very common occurrence.

If you really want the bass, I'd suggest you hire a bobcat and excavate a nice big garden pond. Then get a suitable filter and way you go. That would be an appropriate home for your bass.

How does your wife feel about taking her fish back to the fish store?

I was referring to the species that reach upwards of 2-3 feet in length...not your average 12" oscar.

Anyways I am curious too as to what the wife is thinking?

I had a pleco with the bass I had, it was a good size pleco and the bass still fit it in his mouth. Right away he spit it out and never bothered it again. I had my bass in a 65g for about 2 years. A friend or a friend stoped by and saw him and just had to have him, he offered me $50 and I couldn't say no.

Aren't sunfish schooling fish?

Not necessarily, many species are aggressive and territorial in aquaria, not unlike cichlids. Others are more docile. I don't think any sunfish are schooling fish in the same sense that the tetras we're all accustomed to usually are. In my experience they do seem to be social, and are often found in groups in the wild (when you catch one in a spot, you'll usually find more). But they do fine in low numbers in aquaria. They do like to hang out around structure (weeds, boulders, fallen trees/logs, docks etc.), and smaller species like bluespotted or banded sunfish really get down in the weeds.

not sure where he is .. but here in SC if you have a large enough pond the county will come out and stock it for you

They will? A private pond they'll come stock it for you?

I'm kinda curious why they do that? Is that for mosquito control?

I can't believe the government does it just as a welcome gift for you joining the large pond club! ;) Is it to control pest species- and make sure that, since they're stocking, it will be native species?
