What else for a 55?

Well, I was having a similar dilema to what you're having. I wanted a BGK and an Elephantnose Fish but after much research I knew they wouldn't be okay in the same tank regardless of how big it was. Anyway, as you can see in my sig. I went with the Elephantnose and love him to bits!!! He's always out and about during the day when I can see him, doesn't shy away when I approach the tank and they don't get bigger than 10 inches.
They're an interesting looking fish too.
They must be kept one per tank or in groups of 3 or more(for larger tanks 90+)
One in your 55 would be okay.
 
I may look into them. I'm not big on them, from the few I've seen. And they're frickin' hard to find anywhere, here. Are african brown knife fish aggressive?
 
I'd personally steer clear of the red finned shark idea, I had one for quite a while but as he grew he became quite agressive and was the source of constant harrassment for the community.

More corys would definently be cool as they're happiest when they have friends to school with. If your water is reasonably soft and you tend to keep the tank on the acid side of neutral, I'd suggest a pair of Blue Dwarf Ram's. They're a beautiful fish with a lot of personality and a peaceful nature (the source of constant laughter here), they do require excellent water quality but if you're disciplined with your tank maintenance you should be fine. Also some flame tetras would balance the tank out nicely, they're robust and one of the more ammusing tetras to watch. I'd probably also look at adding a bristlenose catfish as they're good scavengers and do a great job of keeping the glass, rocks etc. algae free. If you do get a bristlenose cat make sure to add at least a small peice of driftwood, even as small as 2" as they love to chew on it and supplement with vegetable matter or algae wafers as they require daily vegetable matter to sustain beneficial gut bacteria (if you get rams, they adore algae wafers too).
 
I'm getting a pair of German Blue Rams, I'm assuming that's what you meant? Those will be in a different tank, though. I already have a decent amount of scavengers, and I've never even heard of flame tetras. Could I maybe get a second blood parrot?
 
Flame Tetra

A nice picture and a little info on the flame tetra can be found here, they should be fairly easy to find, all the LFS's in my part of the world stock them. They don't nip fins like the Serpae Tetras but are otherwise quite similiar in nature, always little disagreements in the school (they never seem to damage each other though, the red areas on their fins become quite intense when chasing each other or showing to females), they're active fish and generally wont be intimidated by larger tankmates.

And yes Blue Dwarf Ram Cichlid is another common name for the German Blue Ram, they're awesome fish, I think you'll love them.
 
Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting them. Could a betta live with them (the rams)? In case anyone in the 55 goes after him or something.
 
I would think a betta would be fine with rams as long as they're not spawning. I had a pair of rams in my guppy tank for about a month and they never caused a problem.
 
Problem is, I intend for the rams to be a breeding pair.
