sorry I missed this.
I have been extremely busy at work(2 jobs)
did you get your answer?
Dundadundun
es and no. everything i wasn't clear on with ich has been filled in. i cannot however reach the makers of the bulbs. that leads me to a dead end on that so far. i do actually have some growing out in a jug with some tank water as we speak. i was curious to see what i could find out and actually itching for new plants. i bought some, dropped them in some water and referred to the info on the back of the package. that's been useless so far again.
by all means, no biggie. we all have lives. your contributions around here are greatly appreciated as are lupins and the other moderators. you guys are golden. thank you very much for inquiring in my mental menagerie.
on a lighter note i may soon be a daddy again to some new "dwarf lillies" and mysterious apons. i think i'll leave the bulbs where they are til they sprout (or don't) this time. i think it's much safer.

ahh
I've used bulbs like those(packaged) my lilies finally produced lilies after 2 years...lol
I usually soak mine in tank water out of the tank.
just in case...letting them sprout in tubs.
I think deep down I don't trust them. some have spoiled and they can emit a rather pungent odor(rotting) which I suspect is not good for the fish.
Dundadundun
much agreed! that odor reminds me of the movie labyrinth with david bowie. it is the smell i imagine most in the bog of eternal stench. well that and a flooded house where the fridge has been tipped over. in great enough volume i assume either would suffice.

Dundadundun,
I found an article online mentioning the difference between disease and poisoning while looking for what aquarium plant bulbs might be treated with, and one of the signs of poisoning is fish gasping for air...

As I said before, definately NOT a fish expert...does any of this sound like how your fish were behaving, besides the gasping? I think the rat thing is a possibility too, not that you have rats in your home, but consider a massive warehouse, full of all kinds of things--food, plant bulbs, birdseed, etc--and you often have a vermin problem. If they are pooping all over a crate of bulbs, you could well end up with something nasty coming home with your bulbs. As you mentioned finding a rash of similar problems when you initially googled, I wonder if there may have been a 'batch' or shipment that got contaminated.
Hope this is a little helpful. If not, tell me to 'shush', no problem.

absolutely no shushing here jennie beth. the rat droppings is good insight. it may also be possible it is not from the bulbs themselves. rather the packaging that may be done or made in another warehouse and subsequently leached afterward on the shelf.
