We are getting ready to set up a 75 gallon and were told to use the Emperor filters, but I have just been told not to use any filters with bio wheels in them. Can you run them without the wheels? Is there a better filter to use? I have already bought 2 400's, but can return them and get something else if they will not work.

A wet/dry filter would be the way to go but they can be exspensive. You could use the 400s with out the Bio-wheels and be fine. They are a big nitrate trap. Basicly your LR and or LS would be all the biological filtration you need. The 400s would be great water circulation and the floss would catch all the extra waste. I wouldn't use the carbon either. I never used it in my 75 and everything was fine.

Good Luck!

I use plain old l.r. as my filter it's all you'll need and you won't have detritus problems down the road as bad as you would with a canister. Just make sure your tank water turns over at least 8 to 10 times per hour ,"more is better ."
