I'm about to start a 55g planted community tank and i would like to know which kinds of fish are recommended. I dont want anything that is going to eat the plants to much, but i also want a fun an diverse tank. I have a few ideas myself, but would appreciate the input. Thanks

well, just for ONE idea, neon tetras LOVE plants, and they're really unique looking. i love them. :) for a community tank, they're a good choice. you could have a HUGE school in your 55 gallon! :) :cool2:

rummy nose
rasbora espei

Von rio tetras are cute and colorful. Lemon tetras are pretty if your water is soft enough. If the water is too hard then the lemon tetras tend to lose thier color. Cardinal tetras are nice and a little more hardy then neons. And lets not forget the harlequin rasboras.

congo tetras are great, they are a little bigger (3-4") than most tetras so they would fill up a 55G better IMO. you might also look into rainbowfish (I reccomend boesmanis) and some type of smaller pleco or some SAEs, as well as cories and loaches if you want algae eater/bottom dwellers

Actually, it would be easier to list the fish that don't do well in a planted community tank. Fortunately, most fish leave the plants be.

true, true... well, some of the larger plecos can uproot plants, and well as any fish that regularly burrows or pokes about in the substrate.

What leads you to believe Cardinals are more hardy than Neons?

Far as I'm aware, stores, if thay insist on testing your water (for warranty purposes) only seem to do so, in my area, for Cardinals.

Not withstanding 'the numbers' (which place the Cardinal in a slightly harder category of water tolerence), Cardinals are harder to get than Neons whereas Neons are almost ALWAYS available at the chain stores - again at least in my area.
