What fish to breed in tropical pond to make $$$

large fish are hard to sell due to people not being able to house them. my LFS has my 20"+ arowana and clown knife for sale for 6 months now, tons of customers just nobody wants to take on such a massive fish. shipping large fish is extremly expensive and risky because if the fish dies in the process, you lose out on all the time and money invested in the fish, which is always more than you can sell the fish for anyways.

good point....they do move slow sometimes......not much of a market, very few people have 300+ gal tanks....

well thats the thing the only real way is to go with fish that sell for a lot of cash. if not the work and time isnt worth it. i think plants are a better idea. get a pound full of java moss and sell it by the pound.

java moss isnt a bad idea. that stuff is overpriced and always in demand. I am sure I could grow a bunch of it. I was thinking about rasing crypts and other plants also.......

Dude read my post. The whole thing is about selling them to pet stores. How could I make MAD CASH if I just killed the fish at the end of the season? That is like a farmer burning his crop in the fall!!!!!!
id hate to break it to ya, but 1 pond with a couple of pairs of convicts or a bunch of guppies sint gonig to bring you in that much money.

if you think that you can be like the fish farms in Asia, think again. they have hundreds of ponds and thousands of fish that they breed.

JM next time read the post from the start. Since when did I talk about breeding convicts or guppies? Thanks for the great advice, I am really glad you took time out of your day to post such value added comments.

Others: I am going to start construction of the pond in the next month. I am going to cycle the pond with some hardy cool water fish like white clouds so that by May the pond will be ready to raise plants and fish. I haven't really decided what to grow but the java moss suggestion is a great one. Contrary to JM1212's extremely insightful comments; I talked to a pet store owner yesterday and he said that getting java moss that isn't brown and nasty can be very difficult at certain times of the year. He said if it is green and looks good he will buy it by the ounce. He said in the past he has bought it off aquarists when they offer, he said a basketball size clump will get $10 if it looks good. He mentioned how it is hard to grow that much in an aquarium; I didn't say anything about that! I also asked him about fish. He told me that if I could raise 10-20 clown loaches to a decent size (4-5") and they were well conditioned and colorful he would personally come out to see them and he would make an offer on the spot if he liked them. He said that getting large clown loaches is tough and there is a huge market for them.

There is a chance this could work!!

WOW! I am just getting used to the Bay Area and the weird obsession with Craigs list. What catagory did you find the posting? Thanks again!

LOL...I'm in the Bay Area and I find fish on craigs list all the time!

I was on craigs list last night and I missed out on a FREE motorcycle. I needed to be worked on, but he was just giving it away. That is crazy....
