What fish to breed in tropical pond to make $$$

I am going to pick up the wood today and I am going to start building the pond to make mad cash. I can smell the money already!

JM next time read the post from the start. Since when did I talk about breeding convicts or guppies? Thanks for the great advice, I am really glad you took time out of your day to post such value added comments.

Others: I am going to start construction of the pond in the next month. I am going to cycle the pond with some hardy cool water fish like white clouds so that by May the pond will be ready to raise plants and fish. I haven't really decided what to grow but the java moss suggestion is a great one. Contrary to JM1212's extremely insightful comments; I talked to a pet store owner yesterday and he said that getting java moss that isn't brown and nasty can be very difficult at certain times of the year. He said if it is green and looks good he will buy it by the ounce. He said in the past he has bought it off aquarists when they offer, he said a basketball size clump will get $10 if it looks good. He mentioned how it is hard to grow that much in an aquarium; I didn't say anything about that! I also asked him about fish. He told me that if I could raise 10-20 clown loaches to a decent size (4-5") and they were well conditioned and colorful he would personally come out to see them and he would make an offer on the spot if he liked them. He said that getting large clown loaches is tough and there is a huge market for them.

There is a chance this could work!!
i did read the whole thread. i know that you never did say anything about breeding guppies or cons, but that is what most people breed in ponds to make some money because they are easy to breed and breed more than rabbits.

and i never said anything about not talking to your LFS guy. i just siad that you arent going to make big $$$ one one pond full of breeders

Let us know what your payback time is. That is, how long it takes from selling the fish just to make back your initial investment. I'd love to have some ponds to commercially sell fish but it's not warm enough here and I don't want to pay to heat anything up.

Well I estimate that my pond is going to cost $250 once it is all done. I actually don't believe that I will make any money on this endever, but I really never expected to. My pond is going to be easy on the eye so that means clean construction and aquascaping. I could have built this pond for about $100 total but it would look really nasty.

This project started off because I want to put my aquarium fish in a pond for the summer, and if they actually did breed I would sell the babies. Currently I have just purchased the following:

$100 for all the lumber for the project
$18 For wood sealer
$7 for the wood screws
$4 for paint brush
$4 for paint thinner.

Total cost so far: $133

I am going with a top end liner, 45 mil EPDM that will cost $80 with shipping.
I am going to build a waterfall that will be constructed from left over wood and liner. I have decided to get some emergent plants along with some water lilies. I am going to try to grow some Crypts and java moss and maybe some tiger lilies. The circulation is going to be quite weak at 300 gph. The final volume of my pond will be 550 gallons. I am going to take pics as I construct the frame so if you wanted you could make your own. We will see how this will turn out. I will start constuction this week.

now you would have sounded a lot smarter if you just put this from the start.

Whats the fun in that? Plus I was interested in the responses I would get....

Koi or comets...they breed quick just make sure you get the fry out before they are eaten

You'd probably make more money if you harvested live foods such as bloodworm. It brings repeat sales and is much less hassle.

Either that, or get a job!
