What fish to get? Compatible?

if you are really willing to get a bigger tank in the near future you could get one and upgrade your tank as soon as nessisary

We will not go with the shark until/if we go bigger. Don't want to get something that commits me to another tank now. Plus as you point out do not want to stunt his health. But would he be compatible with my fish Zebra Danios, Platys, maybe neon tetras, abino corys if I ever went that way.

I have a friend with a silver dollar in her 90 gallon tank. He is huge. She has had him about 7 years and he has eaten all of his tankmates. (tigerbarbs) He ate all of the fins off of her angelfish one night and they died. It was awful. He has to live by himself in the 90 gallon tank because he is really mean and can't act civilized with other fish.
I doubt that was a silver dollar. They are herbivores and don't eat other fish. It might have been a Redhook, which are often sold as silver dollars but are not. They grow 12+ inches and are supposed to be herbivores as well, but I've no experience with them.

Dollars I do have and they do not eat other fish. They eat plants. ALL yer plants grrrr, except onion plants.

slthoeny,

Silver dollars are schooling fish and need to be in groups of six or more. They need a min of 65g tank. They can grow anywhere from 6-8", depending on type.

There is a "silver dollar" that is often sold by Petsmart or Petco out on the west coast, but they are mislabled and are really Redhooks that grow 12+ inches.

Last time I was at my friend's house her tank light was off. So, I haven't seen him in a while. It sounds like he is not a silver dollar. She may be confused, I hate to say it, but she's not the brightest person on earth.

I didn't want to ask because I think she's still pretty upset about his eating rampages.

The 6 blue danios I had just terrorized each other. They lived alone in my 29 gallon at the time. This was my newbie days when I was dumb enough to go with the fish store's guidance and cycle with fish. But, those danios lived quite nicely through the cycle. I hated watching them isolate the smaller members of the school into a little cave and starve them and nip at them. My biggest danio killed several with this method. It was awful.

I think mine may have just been psycho or something. They may have just been that way because they had a 29 gallon tank all to themselves.

Yeah I think I am hooked. The starnge part is I never really wanted fish before. But my daugheter really did. I said no. But her grandmother said yes, at her house. Well she kept killing fish, and that got me researching what was happening. So one thing led to another.... And here I am.

Take my time. I am not very patient, but can be for the sake of the fish.

I think I have narrowed my choices down to:
6-8 zebra danios
3 corys probably albino
2-4 platys currently have two males
and something else.

I really liked the tiger barbs, but see they are not the best choice with my other fish:( Maybe some neon tetras, or a different tetra. What do you think of the black skirt tetra, head and taillight tetra.

I really appreciate all the help. Thank you all.
