This is very Mysterious!! I have my tank in a central aired house, which is about 75, and my tank I found out was about 81!! Not good I know!! My lights are only for only 5 hours a day, as I am attacking algae right now... Could it be my power heads?? Even with the lights turned off it seems to heat up.... After getting hold of one problem another surfaces!!

Make sure the heater is not stuck on, if you have one. What kind of pumps do you run. Have you tried using fans to cool the water. 81 is nothing to freak out over either. Fans bring the temp down about 3 or 4 degrees in my 120. I run MH's and VHO's for 12hrs a day, fans only on when lights are on. My tank will gain about 1.5 to 3 degrees overnight, so the tank runs between 78 and 81 all the time. My ambient temp in the house is about 77. I don't know if any of this makes sense or is of any help, just my experience.

I reckon fish add heat - I know it sounds far fetched but whilst my new tank was cycling I was able to keep the temperature steady, as soon as I added fish I'm having problems!!!! Nothing else has changed, not even the lighting schedule (Iwas naughty and ket them on for the same amount of time I have them on now as liked watching the new rocks!!!!!)

But yes - powerheads and pumps do contribute to the heat.

I have a set of 4 fans that clip on the edge of the tank to help keep mine cool and an automatic cut off for the heater just in case that ever goes.

I am having some problems also... My fans on my Nano have broken or something. well let's just say they are not working! Can I call JBJ and get replacements for free. I set my heater at 79 and it is at 81-82 during the day. It drops to 79 at night. Is 82 bad for my Xenia? It is not fully expanded during the day for the last two days.

Jake- it depends on whether your Cube is still under warranty, and if it is, you must have a receipt showing when you bought it. If it's not under warranty, I don't think they will replace the fans for free.

81-82 isn't terrible, just as long as it doesn't get any warmer than that. Also, remember that even when the fans are working, the tank is likely to heat up since there is a closed top on it. I run 65 W PC lighting over my 15, plus 2 power filters and a small powerhead, and the temp never goes above 79. My tank is open top, though.

It also depends on where it is in the room... I have a cape cod type house (with the "A" shaped ceilings upstairs), and my tank sits on the dresser near the top of the room. I have a window AC unit next to the tank, and the water stays at about 82 degrees all day, and all night, because the heat from my house rises up into the ceiling of my room.

Do you have a cover on your tank? Depending on the cover, the heat could be trapped inside the tank and may have little room to escape.

I had the same problem, my water would get too hot. I shot off the heater completely at this point. the temperature doesn't go lower than 75F overnight. but my HQ light gets the temperature up throught a day and at night I run the lights over my refugium with clear plastic cover and that keeps the temperature fearly stady. but because of my protein skimmer, i was having a hard time keeping my temperature below 80, now that it broke, my set up is at what i described above.
