what illness is this???

Not sure about the UV sterilizer... if it is internal and bacterial, I doubt it'd have an effect. Can anyone else help?
 
got the food...gonna pull my apple snails and stick them in an empty 10g. the food has copper, zinc, and manganese proteinate. Is this going to kill my cherry shrimp (I have no hopes of catching them to move)?
 
It may... You may have to choose between being protective of the fish and putting the shrimp at risk. Sucky choice, but it may be reality. Just be careful that if the shrimp do die, they don't go unnoticed and cause other problems. They can be replaced easily and free of charge. ;)

i started treating the small tank, I just can't make the plunge with the larger one...sigh. Moved all my snails into a 10g for now.
 
on a larger fish i would suspect just an infected abrasion caused by running into tank decor, but on a tetra that is very unlikely. i will agree with nolapete and say it is an advanced bacterial issue, otherwise it may be viral with those open sores. continue as directed with antibacterial treatment so no other fish get infected/get worse.
