I just recieved my cleanup crew in the mail today, which included some cerith snails, some nassarius, a couple of astraeas, and 5 scarlet hermits. I drip acclimated for a couple of hours, turned out the lights in my tank, and put them all in.

I put them in the same general area so I could see how many survived, any acting strange, etc. The snails all took off in different directions, they all survived.

4 of the hermits went scuttling off into the rockwork, but one stayed in the same spot. I came back a couple of hours later, and saw he hadn't moved, and one of his legs had broken off and was resting on the sand below him. A while later, both of his claws were broken off and laying on the sand. A snail came by and took the legs with him. Then, another leg broke off, and another snail came by and took it. The cleaner shrimp came down to investigate, and another leg broke off! He was down to one leg, and then that broke off as well! So now he is a pair of eyes, and a shell. I picked him up and put him in an area with less traffic so he at least has a shot. Still alive, for now. I know they can regenerate limbs, but can they survive long enough without any left?

All of the other inverts are fine, the 5 hermits I had before I put in these 5 are all still alive and moving around. He wasn't attacked by anything, I was there pretty much the whole time.

Has anyone else had anything like this happen? Just strange...

That is strange ! I'd guess that it was injured in collection or transport. Does it have a way that it can feed it's self ? I hate to sound negative and I hope I'm wrong but, I wouldn't hold out much hope.
sorry

Yeah, he's done. A snail is finishing him off right now. That was really bizarre. Hopefully it's a one time thing.

Hehe...I know it wasn't your intent, but I found your description of your doomed crab rather humorous...it reminded me of the joke about the lost dog who had one eye, three legs, was "fixed," and went by the name "Lucky". I have had crabs in the past that have crumped rather quickly once their number was up. Only one loss in the shipment is not bad.

I can handle a couple losses, but what really made me mad was their inability to count to 12. I ordered 12 cerith, and recieved 11. Now I can understand maybe one dying, or throwing in an extra or two in case of some die off, but I'm having a hard time accepting the fact that they shorted me to begin with. It really isn't that hard.

That does suck...usually most places will throw in a few extras....maybe you should let them know and see if they make things right....
