I would like to keep snails in my tanks. Right now I have a few ramshorn snails in my 30 gallon tank which seem to be doing ok. But the olive nerita snails in my 10 gallon aren't doing too good at the moment. They have shell erosion I'm going to try and give them calcium supplements but not sure if they will eat it or not. I was just wondering what the ph requirements snails need. The ph in my tanks are usually 7.0. Is that to low for snails? What snails do well in a ph of 7.0?

Increase the pH by as much as 8.0 using calcium carbonate. If your KH is very low, dose with liquid calcium by Kent which is calcium chloride that increases the KH. Your water may be too soft.

Almost all snails need higher PH I recomend 7.4 or higher.

what is your hardness? that is what is really relevant. You want water with alot of carbonate hardness to prevent erosion. Typically this will be found in water with a higher pH.

i don't really want to mess with my ph since my fish are doing so well. I'm not sure what my water hardness is. I'll have to check that. liquid calcium is that for salt water? the only liquid calcium I've seen in pet stores were for salt water tanks. if i raise the ph with baking soda how much should i use? would increasing the ph harm the fish at all as long as I don't raise it too fast? so 7.4ph would be high enough or would it have to be higher than that?

I would personally like it to be 7.6 or higher

Actually, Flower, pH is hardly an issue for captive bred fish unlike the snails. Liquid calcium is mostly calcium chloride which we use to increase the KH thus stabilizing the pH however this is only a temporary fix so you need to add this and retest every water change. 7.4 is hardly high. My pH run from 7.6 to 8.0 range and all my fish including plecos and loaches are absolutely fine.

All my water hovers at around 7.4 and is mildly hard. I have vary little shell errosion in my snails. This is due feeding the right foods and paris pucks which will be key if you don't want to change the PH.

I also have fish in several of my tanks and they handle it just fine. Most tropicals can take on a PH of 6.0 - 8.0 with no real hardship.
