If you do go with a rubber band, change it every week or so as to prevent it from snapping on one of the fish.

You could could stick it in some boiling water for a few seconds. Works for me.

I really wouldn't leave it in the tank for more than a day, day and a half for the fact that it starts to get ratty and whatnot...

As suggested, boil greens for about a minute as this will help soften them and allow the fish to more easily break them down.
