As of right now, I have a spot for a 40 gal. I want to go plants, rcs and maybe otos beyond that its unknown. the questions I have are which size 40 should I go with? I was thinking a 40 long. Also what is better, acrylic or starphire glass? I won't be changing this tank to anything else so I'm not worried about if I have the sw option or not. Substrate I have been lookin at is eco complete or the stuff aquarium plants sell. With acrylic will either of these scratch easily?

IMO acrylic scratches if you say a strong word in its presence. I personally would go with glass. The dimensions are up to you. I've seen nice scapes in 40 longs and 40B.

I have heard the reason for getting acrylic is that they are lighter, stronger, and don't scratch as easily. That being said I like glass better. I do have a scratch on one of my seven tanks, but I can live with that. I thing whether you go with long or tall, it is your personal preference and the footprint you can have in the space alotted. I personally like the talls better, I just think they look nicer. I also like to put fish in for every substrate level. Killis for the top, catfish for the bottom and something cool in between. I can't say anthing about the substrate, i have heavily planted tanks and I just use gravel and my plants are great. I have about 20 in each tank. What type of fish are you thinking of getting other than ottos, or is this a stricktly planted tank?

As far as other fish what I've had in mind is some small tetras like neons or white clouds or some guppies. If guppies thenn I can always then out the pop by feeding to my crappie but that's more of an after thought. Mainly small fish that are active, colorful, tendency to stay at the top of the water column and doesn't harass shrimp since that's my main focus as for as fauna goes( I know fish will eat the shrimp just wanna keep it to a minimum)

IMO---I use the 55gal as mid. 55gal or below, I prefer glass. Bigger, I prefer plastic--lighter.

I have a 100 and a 120. One is glass, the other plastic.

PS---I would get the long. More surface area.

Uh, I guess geometry wasn't your best subject in school! The area of a 48" x 12" rectangle (40 long) is 576" sq. The area of a 36" x 18"(40 breeder) tank is 648" sq.

Ok so one question has been answered. Ill be going with starphire glass. Still torn between the long and the breeder. The LFSs in my area really suck as far as having tanks in stock so Im having trouble with which one I like the look of more. The breeder would cut my costs a little as far as lighting goes since I dont plan on using a hanging setup. Also another fish that has caught my eye is the stiphodon atropurpureus (blue neon goby). Anyone ever had any experience or advice? Id like to have a lot of contrasting colors. I had thought about green shrimp but not sure if they will stand out or not in a heavily planted(eventually) tank. Im thinking with a black substrate that bright colors other than green would really pop, hence why Ive had my eyes on red cherrys. But yellow would be cool as well. Thoughts and opinions?[h=2][/h]
