I see tank sizes being thrown around like large tank, small tank, mid tank etc.

But what are generally the sizes? Since someone with a 200 gallon will consider a 55 small, while someone with a 2.5 will say a 55 is large. What's the generally accepted values?

It really is all a matter of perspective. There is no set rule. To someone with a 20 gal tank, my 125 would be huge. But to some of the fishkeepers over on our sister site MFK, my 125 is tiny.

As you already mentioned, the distinction is somewhat dependent on the individual, stock, and circumstances.

Personally, I consider 55 Gallons to be the threshold to medium-size tanks since that mark usually opens up a lot of possibilities and makes maintenance easier. About 125 Gallons would be my "large" mark.

Overall, I'd say 50 gal is where you break into medium. It depends on the person for sure. When I got a 50 gal, I thought it was HUGE. Now it seems TINY and I want a 300. (I want bigger, but that's the realisticish number)

In consideration of my various post on this forum and numerous others Id say that the feel for tank size fall into 5 descriptive categories
(1) Small 2.5-10 gallon
(2) 15-30 medium
(3) 50-75 Large
(4) 100-150 Very large
(5) 200-500 Big
(6) beyond this insane lol, or more normal solution a pond.

Personally I'm tempted to go into the Big category with this steal deal add http://mohave.craigslist.org/for/1290150450.html
but I realize I have much more room in my back yard for a Koi pond.

LOL probably more like a small sump, huh?

And yea, it depends on whos saying small, med, large.
That why its not good to make a thread something like...

I have a small tank, is this filter enough?

I don't see much for general small, med, large being thrown around really.

But I guess if I was to give an answer, just to give one. 55g would probably be a Medium, to gauge the rest against?
