what is egg crate?

no its a plastic grate used in industrial lighting... you can probly find it at a hardware store.

i didn't know what they were talking about originally either..

An egg crate can be 1 of 3 things...

The first most popular is the mattress pad
the second is the Lighting egg crate that silentskream said,
and the third is a egg holder...like the kind they have at restaurants for large quantity egg boxes...

here is the one for the lighting that silentskream was talking about
http://www.samys.com/browse.php?cat=398&mfg=0&PHPSESSID=06ec02118d0881ce68

and you do see those everywhere in buildings, especially office buildings...it produces more light with less wattage in the bulbs, if I am not mistaken...

but the most popular is the egg crate mattress pad, that is typically used by hospitals, where patients are immobile. And it prevents bedsores and the such...

and there are some other uses of egg crates also...like for acoustics, and for flooring (you can get egg crate vent covers to match your wood flooring, would have never thought of this one)...

a fourth use - i have a flat rack for drying dishes, and it is made of egg crate.

No, pretty cheap. I got mine at Home Depot. Not the most fun stuff to cut. Use a jigsaw if you can.

that's why most people use egg crate (the industrial lighting kind) for aquarium projects. it's utilitarian, and very economical.
