WHAT is Killing my Fish?????

Your tank is very heavily stocked for a new tank. You may, or may not be done cycling...nitrite and ammonia need to be at 0 and nitrates need to show up.

Native fish need cooler water - especially in winter. How cool is your water? Without the cooling period, most have health issues.

Also, your tank will be way overstocked when those fish grow up. Heck, even at 4" for each fish you're likely to be overstocked at this point simply because your good bacteria are not yet up to the numbers needed to stock that many fish.

I'm not surprised you're seeing symptoms like you are, but I'm glad your asking questions and seeking help. Definitely get the nitrite and nitrate tests. You may need to do a lot of water changes to get everyone back in good health. Antibiotics at this point are likely to cause serious disruption of your bacteria and cause further problems with the cycle. I'd stick with lots of water changes and if you lose fish, don't replace ANY until the tank is stabilized and the fish healthy.

well I do have a few dozen small fish.. 95% of them under 4 inches. im not planning on keeping all of them. my tank technically though would allow for 10 feet of fish.. inch per gallon so i dont think too many is an issue. what I have done is set up a 10 gal. sick tank or quarantine tank as tank techs like to say.. I will sort out the ill and treat them in the 10 gal. so as not to disturb my tank cycle and not harm my plants.. amazingly at this point all my fish are looking good! ill keep any eye on them and hopefully wont have to use the 10 gal. much. If the fis i have now stay healthy ill simply use the 10 gal. to treat new fish from the bait tanks before they go in the 120 gal.

thanks for all the help I think its finaly starting to come around !

the inch per gallon rule is bunk
think about it.
is it ok for a 10 inch oscar to be in a 10 gallon tank?
yea didn't think so.

Perch and bullheads easily bust the inch per gallon rule - they're both thick fish compared to most tropical fish, and cooler water fish need to be stocked lighter than warm water fish.

Also, when your tank is new, like yours, the bacterial colony is not up to snuff. Really, since you didn't fishless cycle your tank you should stock at an exceptionally low level until the tank is cycled and the bacterial colony is built up.

I understand there are some limits to the inch per gal. rule but.. im not even close to that yet.. ill be giving away most of the bull heads and perch.. in the end when all is settled I plan to have 2 or 3 sun fish a bass or two a bull head and mabey a cat fish. for sure no more than 8 fish total.. I feel without a cooler I wouldnt have much luck with crappys or walleyes.. not sure about pike.. we'll see what happens

Not sure if I read the whole thread, but I just read up on the red streaking yesterday concerning angelfish.
I immediately did a 20% water change.
an hour later I did another. The ph was high!
I also had ammonia. (Are you using an API master kit, you really NEED to!!)
I had alot of deaths before I got the whole kit.
As my angels had the red outline around the body, which can be caused by ammonia. It cleared up pretty much straight away.

Maracyn II was the suggestion for the disease you mention.

If you use the anti biotics, it will harm your growing beneficial bacteria, so you must try and boost that again.
Have you got another tank with gravel, filter, plants?
I would loan them to your new tank. Yes use prime 5ml per 40 gallon I believe.
Perhaps try Bio booster?
remove any carbon/charcoal from filter before the treatment.
Reduce light useage. many things work better in the dark, and eliminate more stress to the fish.
Drop some plants on the top too or add little houses so shy fish can hide.

Good luck,
