Hi,

I am looking for some help in identifying my fish (my avatar piccie). I have two of these disc shaped fish (Pinky and Perky), one blue and one pick although I have been told they were dyed for sexing identification. The man in the shop told me they were Willows although I doubt this now as I can't find any info on them. DOes anyone know what fish this is and how big it gets (i.e. when my silver sharks have moved to their big tank should they go to too).

All that I know is they are disk shaped, like angel fish but without the 'whiskers' and are peaceful in my community tank. They also don't seem to go around together, so are quite independent (leading me to believe they are not shoaling fish). Any help would be great.

Thanx

Leigh

How big are they?

Its a tetra. They are called Painted Glass Fish.

They are dyed but I'm not sure they know at the time if they're M/F. I never looked that closley.

That dosen't look like a painted glass fish to me.. Those usually have a neon stripe and are thinner I thought. To me it looks like a parrot type fish but maybe its just misperceiving but it dosne't look flat to me.

Strawberry Tetra. It's a *******ized version of the Blackskirt/Goldskirt tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi/var.) that has been dyed.

Hi,

After spending ages with the camera, finally I got to take some pictures of the fish (Perky). I think she is a little camera shy as she didn't want to stay still and pose. Perhaps photography isn't my area. Anyway I hope these are a lttle clearer and might allow a definate answer to what type of fish she is. Perky 2 is proabably the best piccie.

Also she is 3 - 4 cm, but i believe not fully grown, only had her 6 weeks or so and is quite a flat (thin) fish. Hope this is some help, will also look at pictures of the suggested fish type and see if any are similar.

Thanks for the help,

Leigh

Looking again, I think it may be a 'fruit loop' tetra. Anyone who could confirm and tell anything about them, how big they grow, lifespan etc would be great.

Thanx

It's a DYED skirt tetra. That's all. It's a skirt tetra that has been injected with dye. Only 3-10% of fish survive that treatment.

It has nothing to do with "sexing" the fish as your LFS claims. It's done because people will buy them like that. That's all.

The color will eventually fade away.

Just look on the web for skirt tetras.

Man, I hate those dye jobs.
