what is my fish

Dyed Tetras

definitely tetra's, been dyed....
Dying process is not as bad as that undergone by glass fish but still not nice..
colour will last a year or more.
Nice fish to watch and pretty hardy, will tolerate a variety of water conditions.
Will grow to about 2 inches and ideally should be in a tank no smaller than 24".
Word of caution: They can sometimes be a bit agressive with Guppie and Bettas. (especially the dyed versions)

Thanks guys, that is brilliant.

I think I must have been lucky with them so far. The pair are very placid and even survived against an aggressive Molly (as rare as that is). I don't really care about the dye, bought them more for their shape than anything else and they are in a 3ft tank so should have plenty of space.

It is my understanding that skirt tetras like to be in groups.
And I second what has already been said. It is a dyed skirt tetra.
They are pretty hardy and generally peaceful in my experience, but I dont think the dyed ones live nearly as long as the natural ones.
Your LFS lied to you, the color has nothing to do with seperating male from female, its just becuase some people like pink, some blue and they sale.

I have since stopped going there and from what I gather they are closing down after sales loss - can understand why. I have found another LFS who refuse to sale dyed fish, always ask you about what is in your tank and how long the fish have been there to ensure you don't get new tank cycling problems and it is not overstock. They also have a strong policy to make sure you have a filter before you buy.
