Let's say the snails/fish died and you want to put the tank away for awhile, or you've bought a used one that looks dirty. What's the best way to clean it up? Is there a cleaning solution that is safe to use on the tanks and filter?

White vinegar is good, bleach and water at 1:5 or 1:10 is also good. Vinegar does better if there's hard water deposits.

Keep in mind, you're really trying to avoid stuff that damages the silicon sealant.

Okay, to take this a step further... What if the previous tank had fish medications in it and I'm worried that it got into the sealant? Will vinegar or bleach remove chemicals like this? Could I soak it for awhile to draw the chemicals out (or neutralize them)?

You can also use salt as a "scouring powder" to get some of the tougher to clean places.

I don't know of anything that would remove contaminates though.
