What is the best substrate for a goldfish?

we have pool filter sand in with ours, and they seem to really like it. I find play sand to be too fine and prone to anaerobic pockets. The pool filter sand hasn't given me that issue. I also like the plain contractor sand that Home Depot sells. The colors in it are really nice (if you want something other than off-white like pool filter sand is).

JMO. :)

I have a mixture of pea gravel and play sand in my goldfish tank. If you go with the sand just use plants (my goldies don't touch swords, crypts or onion plants) and snails to prevent any anaerobic pockets from forming.

I use about a 1/4 inch of fine beach sand with a little oolitic aragonite sand thrown in to buffer. I have a tub or two with play sand and that good too but I like the fine uniform consistency of the fine sand.

It blows into bare spots and sand banks. When I change water I run my hand through the sand, stirring it up and spreading it back out. That kicks out the fines and aerates the sand. I do very large water changes so most of the fines are removed with the water.

If you search my blog for sand there is more info about aragonite and my other uses for sand.
