What is the gender of my Jack dempsey

From the picture, it looks like a beautiful Jack Dempsey! Determining the gender can be tricky, but typically:

  • Males have brighter and more intense colors, especially blues and greens, and longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins.
  • Females are usually less colorful and have more rounded fins. Some females may also have a black spot on the dorsal fin.
Based on what I can see, if the colors are bright and the fins are sharp, there's a good chance it's a male. However, without seeing a few more angles or behaviors (like pairing or nesting), it's hard to say for sure.

Try posting a few more pics from different angles, and if possible, a few close-ups of its vent for a more accurate determination.

Thanks so much for your great explanation. I will try to take more pictures. He is hiding now :)

How big is your fish? It looks maybe 3 inches or so?

Many fish, cichlids especially, look female when small...It looks kinda girlie. Dorsal (top) fin looks short & rounded; anal (bottom) fin looks longer but not as long as male's get...when adult.
