ok i'm going to start by saying i don't know much at all about marine tanks, this is not my tank, it is a tank in my class. it keeps getting plagued with this nasty algae, and it seriously takes over the whole tank.

so what is this algae and how do i get rid of it and prevent it from coming back? i think its red slime algae but i'm not sure.

sorry for the cell phone pics, its the only thing i had with me at school.

i don't know many specs about the tank, but whatever specs might be helpful just ask and i'll try and get them.

thanks for your help!

hmm thats weird, i can see them fine.

it is probably because i copied them from attachments i sent to my email. i'll try saving them on my computer and attaching them here.

i pray to god for your sake its not dino.. if its red i think your in the clear :)

ok the pics should be fixed. i saved them and uploaded them to photobucket and then embedded em here.

what is dino?

its not dino algae.. lucky you lol how long is the tank been running?

um i think we set it up this time last year, or maybe very early this year. i'm really not sure as this tank is not my responsibility, i maintain a freshwater bluegill tank in that class, but i volunteered to research this algae because i knew you guys would help me out.

from the research i did in class it looks to me like red slime algae (cyanobacteria). but i'm not really sure. i could bring in my camera to take a pic of it, but the girl whose tank it is cleaned all the algae off today so i'd have to wait a while for it to come back.

in my brief reading about red slime, it mentioned that a protein skimmer was vital in all reef tanks, because they get rid of dissolved organic carbons, which are what red algae feed on. this tank didn't have one, so i went and set up a really big protein skimmer (one rated for like a 100+ gallon tank) on this one.

it doesnt look like dino to me. its more webby and intensely brown.. i would know because i ... just had it :( im going with diatoms right now myself need better quality pics i suppose
