What is this Algae?

i suppose its not neccessarily bad unless your keeping corals, especially sps. go to Conkis 34gal reef build and read the last few pages of the thread. youll understand it then. if its just fish then i wouldnt be as worried, it doesnt really look like dino though

i don't think there are any corals in there, just live rock and fish, and some kinda red and white shrimp. peppermint shrimp maybe. i dunno, not my tank.

i had diatoms in my freshwater tank and they didn't look like this. they were not as thick. but then again that is freshwater not marine. that is why i originally thought red slime algae.

Sounds like Cyano to me then. Chemi-Clean works great on it although it isn't the solution to the problem.. it will make it go away but it will come right back when you stop medicating if you don't fix the source of the problem.

yeah, thats the thing, what causes it and how can i stop it?

Bad water source (ie. Tap water), overfeeding, and too much light are some things that cause it. Low flow will also help it take hold quicker although I have seen it in high flow tanks as well so flow alone isn't the cause or solution.

does this person use RO?!

Or better.. RO/DI.. and if so what is the TDS reading to make sure the filters and DI resin is good. Actually, most schools use Tap water on their SW tanks from my experience, K-12 schools anyway, due to budgets. At the college I work at they won't even spring for a RO unit.. they have a giant cylinder for DI resin and they only use DI water, not RO/DI.
