What is this fish?

It's a friend of mines.

She wanted to know but I wasn't sure what it was.

Looks like a Vieja hybrid to me. Most likely part Vieja maculicauda and part Vieja Synspilum or Vieja bifasciatus. But I supposed it could be a full booded Maculicauda, and the colors could be explained by it being of the Costa Rican race. What happened to his tail?

I'm thinking it is a Black Belt cichlid (Cichlasoma maculicauda)

Or maybe a synspilum.

definatley has black belt IN it. but not a true black belt belt, maybe bifaciatum/maculicauda mix.
