Hi guys.....I have a white coccoon type substance growing in my gravel.....mostly in the corners of the tank!!

If anyone has ever seen a small coccoon with a bug in it and tried to clean it away......it is almost sticky and sticks to whatever touches it.

This is the same way.....it's disgusting.....I am trying to gravel vac and it totally stuck (intertwined) within the gravel and I have to physically yank it out of the tank with something.

Even siphoning it up with my gravel vac is totally difficult.....if it touches the sides of the vac it sticks!! I mean this is just really disgusting!!

It has been about 10 days since I gravel vac'd......and I totally didn't see this growing until about a day or two ago......but it doubled the size in those 2 days!!

Even after gravel vac'ing.....I stirred up all the gravel and a ton of it just started floating around.....but I couldn't siphon any more because I was already past the 50% mark......not by much though!!

Hope someone knows.......by the way its a 10g, freshwater with only guppies in it! My levels were all perfect before vac'ing.

Thanks!!

No....unfortunately.....no pictures....I vac'd the heck out of the tank last nite. It is like a white cotton stuck in the gravel.

I did some other research last night......and it sounds logical to me that this is some sort of fungus from uneaten food. Then when I asked the rest of the household if they have been feeding the fish.....I learned my girlfriend decided to dump a cup full of frozen brine shrimp into the tank.

And of course....keep silent about it.....when I am going nuts trying to figure out what it is!!

But in any case...my water parameters are:
pH: 7.1
Amm: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: about 10
temp: 78-79

Hope this helps!!!

Thanks!

Sounds like you hit the nail on the head...
Fungus growing on uneaten food.
Especially seeing as so much was just 'dumped in'

You are doing the right thing though, keep sucking it up and doing water changes.

And tell your girlfriend you will electrify the lid of the tank if she doesn't keep her fingers out of it! :grinyes:

thats a good idea :D, especially for my downstairs fry tank...

anyway, if it really is mold it shouldnt be difficult to vacuum up from the gravel.
