I was given a 50 gallon tank and stand. Along with it came a lot of equipment. One thing being a Powerhead 301 by Askoll. Can someone tell me that that might be used for? Do I need it for a freshwater tank?

Can use to power UGF or any number of items. I believe they are made in Italy.

Really no different than any other powerhead. Yes,You can use it on FW if you wish. Just depends on how you want to filter your tank, etc.

If you want, you could cut out a piece of foam to put over the intake and call it a mini filter. That's what I did with a Penguin 550 in a ten gallon.

Besides as a filter or to dyve a UGF/RUGF, it can be used to eliminate deadspots or agitate the surface of the tank.

agreed, Most tanks have dead spots, water has a hard time getting filtered in these areas, a powerhead will fix this problem.
