What is your favorite filter media?

What is your favorite filter media? Your favorite filter media can be anything that goes in a filter and can be any filtration type ex: mechanical, biological, chemical, anything that you put in a filter to filter the water. I would also love to hear some DIY filter mediums.

My favorite media is the sponge because it can provide mechanical and biological filtration at the same time.

I guess sponge/foam is my overall favorite, as well.
For a chemical media I've gotta go with Purigen.

chem: tetra super activated carbon(cause its good)
bio: pot scrubbers

I heard that pot scrubbers work very well but I have yet to try them.(I am just getting back into aquarium keeping so I have not gotten to try very many filter mediums.)
