Hello
I got a wondeful idea of changing the places of my swords yesterday while doing a water change and some trimming
the swords all had dupla balls near there roots

After the water change and re arranging of plants,
I noticed the shrimp had come off the tree root as usual and were walking around the bottom. They then began falling over on their sides etc. By the end of the day, they have all died

Now, there are only two differences to my water change
1) rearranging of the plants...could it have brought up stuff in the gravel that killed the shrimp

2) I added a little more CO2, (Seachem's Excel Liquid CO2) than usual

I have lost no fish,

Any Ideas????

Check the bottle--some plant ferts contain trace amounts of copper, which is lethal to inverts. A higher dose could have added more than they could take.

Hi Oriongirl

Yeah...I am thinking that adding that little extra Excel might have been a factor

there is nothing stirring up the gravel would have done huh???
I used Dupla Balls around the swords and I was thinking maybe that mayhave been a contributor

What do you think???

I'd check the ingredients...If either of them contain copper, that's the likely cause.

I have found that amanos can withstand a significantly higher dose of Seachem Excel than most kinds of fish (no, fish and shrimp aren't the same, I know that). Right now, I have 16 amanos in 9 gallons of water, getting almost 1mL of Excel a day. No problems here, but results may vary. The plants are loving it.

Check the 'gredients on those Dupla balls, and post your results here. We're in it for the information, you know....

Amano shrimp will lay on their sides and look like they are dead when they are molting (shedding their shell). It's possible that you changing the tank around shocked them into molting, which is what you saw. If you ever see your shrimp lying on their sides, move them into a cave or heavily planted area and they should be out in a couple days.
