What kind of Arrowana do i have?

I was just curious. I'd never have one, I don't have, nor can I afford the size of tank needed to house one. I did, however, just read (am only 1/4 of the way through the thread) on MFK about the guy who built a 50,000 gal tank. Suppose he has enough room for a couple of aros. :-)

he has several (are you talking about johnptc?). met him last weekend. SPLENDID tank. insanely huge. gorgeous fish. hes got SEVERAL silver aros as well as a huge gigas named sam

No I'm talking about Arapaimag. He built the 50,000 gallon tank off his basement.

o god that guy! i want to know if hell adopt me

Haha, you and me both! If I weren't worried about what kind of predators are in that tank, I just might bring my scuba gear and pay HIM so I could clean the tank!! LOL!

So I've heard. It's been mentioned a lot in the 120 pages of that thread, but after seeing the pictures and reading the stories, I shall NEVER complain about my trivial water changes ever again.

Asian arowanas are illegal in the USA due to being endangered. People used to collect them from the wild causing wild Asian aro populations to fall.
The current situation as I understand it, is plenty of Asian aros are bred in captivity for the aquarium trade, however nobody is breeding them to be released into the wild.

I feel they should become legal in the US because buying the captive bred Asian aros won't effect the problems the wild ones are facing. They have become legal everywhere else but the USA and possibly Australia, I forgot now.

:iagree: We should be able to keep Asian Aros in the US. Texas residents are allowed to keep endangered species of Tigers as pets, but we cant keep this aro? Farm bred Asian Aros are tagged with a microchip and come with a certificate of identity to show that they are not wild caught fish. Also, even though they are able to live in a smaller tank than a silver because they grow to around 2 feet, I don't think many of the "average" fish keepers will own one seeing as they normally cost 1,000+ US dollars. Just my 2 Cents

Save the Arowana!
