What kind of camera do you use?

I use a Nikon CoolPix s7c. It takes good pics, although it does have a hard time focusing on shrimp and snails. A cool feature is that the screen is huge, and I can zoom in when I'm looking at pics I've took and crop right there on any part of the pic. So I can get really nice pics of my fish just by taking a pic of the whole tank and then zoom and cropping. Turns out really nice.
 
Well there is a trade off. I am not sure about the other guys but flash if fine and I have gotten some great pictures with it. You need to know how to use it. You can use a flash from the top like mentioned above and it works great however you can also use it from the side. You just have to make sure you have the relfection out of the frame and to focus through the glass not on it. I use a nikor lens 70-300mm with a min distance of 1.5m. It is really good for taking close-ups of the fish and has that great close min distance that not many lenses have. Has anyone tried a macro lens??? I would be interested in your results.
 
I use a 270 mm zoom and shine a bright light at the tank. I have used a flash before with no ill effects on the fish, but the flash does reflect back on the glass ruining the picture. Next time I do this I will look at my settings - I do not that I use the macro or flower setting on the camera.
 
I use a Nikon D50 with a few different lenses, but I like the 17-50mm promaster. I always use overhead flash, usually diffused by a styrofoam box, and a shutter no less than 1/125. I always try to have the shutter twice as fast as the focal length is long.
Start with the lowest ISO possible, because as it increases so does noise. If you don't want to use flash, a lot of the time you're forced to open the aperture all the way which results in more light, but a shallow depth of field. The flash is the best way to compensate for that. You can use a smaller aperture and still get adequate light. Higher F numbers will mean more of the fish and background in focus. I usually go for dramatic lighting so I use as high of an Fstop as I can, with a shutter as fast as possible.

Rallysman, I have only one lens capable of the short focal lengths that your 17-50mm probably is, and it's a 50mm prime (f/1.4). Great lens, but without zoom it's pretty hard to capture moving targets like fish. I've mostly been using the weak-nut kit lens which is 18-55mm f/4.5-5.6 (IIRC). But I do get your point, and will experiment more. One problem is that have no flash other than what came on the camera, although I'd like to add that to my Christmas list. I notice the noise on a 1600 ISO shot, but even at 800 the images seem pretty clean.
