What kind of eel would be best...

how big is the tank and what do you have in it?

possably a peacock eel

Peacocks are pretty cool. I was either going to get the senegals or the peacock and the senegals won.

This site has some info on the peacock and some tankmates it would be compatible with.

I'd go with a regular spiny eel, they're smaller. The peacock will grow to 15 inches, and the minimum tank size is 40 gallons. 15 more gallons won't make enough difference if you really want to give it he room it needs. They are also carnivorous, so be wary if you try it. Good luck with your choice in eels.~Angela

I've had both Tire Track and Fire (really cool) eels in community tanks, both with alot of luck. For the Fire eel, I dropped an old fashioned clear-glass, long neck bottle into the tank. It took him a couple of days to find it, but when he did, he loved it. I was able to see him great, and I could feed him blood worms, sent down a rigid 1/2" tube, right to the bottle opening...pretty funny to see the other fish unsuccessfully attacking the blood worms on the way down! Eels are a really cool addition to a tank - go for it.

i would be wary if your looking into any of the polypterus family(the afore mentioned senegals) because they are mostly predators and once they grow you may start losing fishies... but they are an awsome fish i have an albino and hes so social he swims all over my tank and just does his own thing i want another. the good thing is the polypterus cannot over extend thier jaw so if it wont fit it spits em back out.

hey laughing budda, don't fire eels grow to about 3'
