What kind of eel would be best...

hey laughing budda, don't fire eels grow to about 3'
Yes. You must forgive some of the things I post as I don't realize that not everyone is willing to be responsible with certain (large growing) specimens. Fishkeeping is my biggest hobby, and I have no problem giving a 2-3' fire eel better accommodations as needed.
I have known of (but do NOT condone) large eels in tanks smaller than 55g. Eels, for the most part, find a nice hiding spot and stay there with their head sticking out. Like a snake, they coil up and can fit in very small crevices.
Of course, this is no excuse for a 3' eel in a 55g tank, but, hey, when I bought my first oscar and put him in a 20g years ago, I had no intention of a 125g in my living room. But, as he grew, I bought bigger and bigger tanks, and now I wouldn't trade my monsters for the world. If it had not been for that ignorant oscar purchase, I don't know if I ever would have known the joys of my wonderful, huge family members and their huge living quarters.
And, of course, I understand it could have been disastrous if I didn't have the room or means to accommodate these fish, as they grew, but, hey, we're all responsible people here, right?
PS: you euthanasia people are SICK!! If you can't find a good home for your overgrown fish, you're not trying hard enough! I would do anything humanly possible to keep from killing my pets. If it takes you 1/2 a year of visiting every pet store you can find, leaving classifieds, etc. to get rid of it, it's still a SMALL price to pay for an innocent life.
At one point, I bought a used 75g for $40 and built a stand out of 2x4s to house my ever growing fish. NEVER would I consider bludgeoning my pets with large rocks!

fair enough. i would also agree with you about fish euthanasia, the only situation where i think it is acceptable is if the fish is in pain which can't be stopped any other way.
sorry about that Kendo, i realise i may have drifted a bit off topic

My .05 cents in your 55 you have
2 Yo Yo loach(most likely the first to be a meal)
6 Penguin
9 Neon Tetras
6 Glowlight
this is a snack bar to any semi-adult bichir/polypterus.Polypterids this includes ropefish
are not to be trusted with any fish under 4'' in length and even then they should be deep bodied-Anne
