I'm not quite a noob to aquariums, but I have never owned a large aquarium before. I currently have a 20 gallon with a marineland 100 power filter, its a little guy. I'm going to be transferring over my fish from my 20 to my 75 because I know they will be getting larger. But I'm not quite sure what kind of filter I should get for the 75. I'm not a huge fan of the current filter on my small tank because the splashing is quite loud and I have it pretty full. Since the new tank is going in the living room, I would prefer a quieter filter. I have used canister filters before when I used to volunteer at an aquarium and where getting water on the floor wasn't a bad thing. But I am afraid that they would leak when I need to clean them out. Any advice on what type of filter I should get????

What species of fish? Smaller community fish such as neons, tetras, etc. don't produce as much waste products as do larger fish such as cichlids.

Canister definitely. As for the brand name, it really depends on how much you want to pay. On the cheap end, they seem to be pretty well made but use cheaper materials so may not last as long as high end filters. On the high end there's better quality but instead of paying full price try Craig's List or EBay. I found a great deal on a Fluval at Petco because it was discontinued. I also have a Sun Sun. It feels cheap but it's quiet no leaks and does the job. I'm not entirely sure the phrase you get what you pay for applies to canister filters, both are great.

I agree 100%, I personally use sun suns because canisters can be a little pricey and the sun suns work great and in my experience and from what I've read hold up just as well as bigger names. The filter does feel a bit cheaper but as long as you are a little careful and not rough when taking it apart for cleanings it shouldn't break.

I enjoy the little canister filter i use now. Its silent and hidden behind my tank. It makes the tank look bigger because less things are inside the tank.
If your worried about leaks, spills, etc etc yiu can just put the canister inside a tote or someyhing along those lines so any water stays within the container

I agree that a canister filter is best for the tank and fish species mentioned.

As for leaks, only once have I had a canister leak, and that is with 17+ years of continuous running of canisters. And then it was due to my not having sealed the head when I replaced it after cleaning.

I can't speak for the brands that others have mentioned as I have not used them. My two Eheims have been running non-stop for over 15 years, and I also have a Rena of three years now. I prefer the Eheims, and while they are expensive they have the track record that other filters do not have, yet.

Byron.
