I wouldn't put plecos in that tank, I think thats what you are refering to. Besides the difference in the temperature range for plecos and goldfish, plecos create a ton of waste, much more than they actually clean, and goldfish are quite the messy fish themselves. Stick with the snails, I have two ramshorns and they are awesome. Always grazing and moving around, granted its slow movement, but activity none-the-less...and probably more active than my piranha LOL.

How do you care for snails? do they need live plants?

I bought my 29g setup complete with 45 lbs of gravel but minus the stand for $100 from walmart. Then I just added a biowheel (rather than the crappy stock power filter). But like has been said, I would try for something like a 38g tank as a minimum. It sounds like you are set on the goldfish as your tank inhabitant so if that is the case, it would be better off in something like a 38g or larger.

the beauty of snails is little to no care involved...I added my two ramshorns in oh...late august I think. Haven't needed to add anything or do anything special. Snails Article


If you are gonna spend that much on a tank, then I would suggest getting a 55g kit from petsmart that includes everything except gravel and stand for $159.99. Thats a great deal IMO. But it all depends on how big you can go, and if you can spend the money on that, space, structure, etc...

Sorry to hitchike but I read in a post somewhere that black mystery snails can't reproduce if there is only one, unlike other snails. Is this true? If so I want to add one with my goldfish, it looks almost identical to the one sam origanally posted. I agree with getting the biggest tank you can, your goldfish will live much longer in a bigger space.

Sorry to hitchike but I read in a post somewhere that black mystery snails can't reproduce if there is only one, unlike other snails. Is this true? If so I want to add one with my goldfish, it looks almost identical to the one sam origanally posted. Hrm, there's not enough filteration with that tank, Sam. You can probably get a 30g tank real cheap locally and if you want, I'll supply you with some links for good equipment as soon as my kids are in bed.

Gimme an hour and I'll have an equipment list for you. You can see if your local pet shop will meet those prices, too.

sam, you have to keep in mind that Gold fish live in COLD water (not ice cold, but they like it in the 60 degree range)

if you want to add other fish to the tank, you have to make sure that the other fish also live in cold water. cory cats are tropical fish, meaning they like warm water, near 80 degrees

also, i feel that one goldfish will get lonely. they don't school, persay, but they do enjoy the company of other goldfish. i have 2 goldfish and 6 koi in my pond and they form loose groups and swim around with each other and chase and play.

So I think I'll buy a 50-55g tank and I'll put 2 Goldfish
