I have a 20 Gallon and I am just cycling right now but I was wanting to have a community tank with some beautiful looking fish in it. I was wondering what kind of fish you guys would suggest. bright colours and eye catching would be nice but I am just a beginner so keeping that in mind what would you suggest?

Paradise fish are nice, but they can be a bit agressive..

wow those are pretty neat looking fish. I was thinking along the lines of schooling groups (ex like 6 zebra danios, couple cardnil tetras, a weather loach, couple guppies maybe if there is room).

well what do you like? schooling fish , solitary fish, breeding pairs, bottom dwellers killis, anabantoids chiclids. once you tell us what you like then we can more assist you in proper stocking

schooling preferably, and active, also I would like to populate different levels of the tank so some top some bottom some middle. Hope that helps a bit.

Weather loaches get too big and prefer cool water. I think the rest of these would be OK together, but schooling species should be in groups of 5 or 6 at the least. If you are not prepared to deal with large numbers of fry, get guppies that are all the same sex. As was already mentioned, the smaller cories would make good bottom dwellers in this setup.

As an alternative setup, you could use coolwater species. I would recommend 5-6 each of southern red-bellied dace and yellowfin or rainbow shiners, and 3-4 rainbow or orangethroat darters as a nice group for your 20. Just let the tank stay at room temp, no heater or thermostat needed.

You can order these fish from various places online, or, if you are lucky enough to live in the southeastern US, catch them yourself.
