What kind of fish

For a 20 gallon I would skip danios and go for cardinals as you can get a bigger school. For sure no weather loaches... as Noto said they get too big and need cooler water.

I'd go with something like this:

10 cardinal tetras
6 corys or kuhli loaches
4 guppies (all male if you don't want fry, otherwise 1 male and 3 females)

Cool thanks for the suggestions guys. I will look into them and when I do start getting some fish I will update you on it.

Cardinal tetras have a reputation as fragile fish. I think it's not so much that they are hard to take care of as that they are often in bad shape when they arrive at the store.

Good to know if I go and get some so I can take extra time making sure they look good and healthy. one question, it is kinda off topic but how often should the mechanical filter media (the sponge) be cleaned out?

It depends on bioload, filter size, etc. I clean mine out about once or twice a month or whenever flow seems to be reduced. No need to get them super clean, just rinse the worst of the gunk off in a bucket of tank water.

Ok, sweet thanks for the help. I just wondered if I should clean it every time I did a water change or do it once a month like the carbon should be changed.

Once a month is fine- always swish it in tank water not tap or the chlorine/chloramine will wipe out your beneficial bacteria.

You don't have to run carbon in the filter. If you do, you need to change it out regularly. I understand about 4 - 6 weeks. Personally I don't run carbon but I use a polyfilter wool thing which does a lot of the same stuff. And eh now that I think of it it also needs to be change 4 - 6 weeks lol.

Anyway ! Have you thought about how you will cycle the tank ?

Most importantly Welcome to AC :) We will insist on seeing this tank as it gets going !
