What kind of plant is this

Mondo grass is not an aquatic plant. It will survive short term but will die off eventually.

If it truly is mondo grass here is a link for you. I must say it resembles it and Plant Geek has always been right on the money for me.

I had some Mondo Grass in my 10 gal for at least one year maybe two, but when I moved it to the new tank it kinda dissolved.

I dont think that picture and mondo grass are the same thing. They look different.....im looking in my plant book and this looks exactly like something called a Fountain Plant. Scientific name (Ophiopogon Japonica). Im qouting here.

"Plant with leathery, sturdy and arched leaves, requires little light, suitable for terrarium and aquarium with cichlids."
Origin: Japan,Indonesia
Lifespan Submerged: 12 months and more

So it sounds like it will do okay for a year and likes hard water.....but ideally not an aquarium plant

apperently its not an aquatic plant...i should kill those petsmart people.
hehe Geeeeeeee Whiz i had some of that too... and guess where I bought it and it was advertised as an aquatic plant..??? :D

I couldn't keep mine alive...even in a planted tank with fertilizer and direct sunlight... it died off little by little, until i got tired of looking at fibrous plant leaf skeletons and yanked what was left of it out... :-/

keep in mind that it is a low light plant...so direct sunlight is probobly not a good idea

Yes, mondo grass is Ophiopogon Japonica. This is why common names can be very, very confusing. What is "mondo" grass to others is a "fountain plant."

As mentioned, it is not a true aquatic plant. It is a marginal plant suited for terraniums and the like. It will only live a short period under water. It is very commonly sold as an aquatic plant at chain pet stores, either because they don't know or don't care.

The issue of it being lowlight really doesn't matter much since it doesn't belong in a tank anyway, but it is okay to grow low light plants in higher light; it just doesn't work well in the reverse:)

You liked it! I may have to be grown emersed for some period. Learn about it. Don't fight it. You can grow it for years if you want.

So there are no adverse effects of growing what are labled "low light" plants in bright light?
