What Kind of Snail?

Ramshorn.

They'll eat algae, detritus, left over food... dead or unhealthy plants. They may punch a hole here and there in healthy plants but that's really not their preference unless they're really hungry.

Add very little to the bioloda and help keep your tank clean- I say they're keepers. (unless this is a breeding tank- because they would most likely eat eggs).

In the presence of an abundance of food they'll replicate like crazy. Snail eating fish like these snails because they have thinner shells than many others.

Yup, ramshorn, they should be fine. One of my faves, even though they're generally considered pest snails.

I think pest is a bad name for any snail... even the bladder snail that I like to make fun of... they only get out of hand if you both overfeed- and are lazy about them.

I like to make fun of bladder snails because they are so common and not that attractive... I wouldn't REALLY want to be bladder free though. I'm also fascinated at the range of shades that bladders come in... and my wife likes watching them do the nasty.

Ramshorns I love- and they come in so many colours.

I've sent out packages of "pest" snails for slightly over cost of shipping to several people.

Rams, Bladder, MTS... they all do good things for an aquarium and are more good than bad.

* They are a good indicator to bad quality water if they all hang out above the water line you know somethings wrong...
* MTS can aerate the substrate...
* They all help deal with excess food/waste and algae.
* With the exception of bladders... most of 'em are quite cute.

In my opinion there is no such thing as a pest snail... and if you have too many and don't want to cut back on feeding- just send some out to fellow aquarists... there are people out there who will gladly take your excess snails off you.

That's why I said generally considered. :) I like 'em all, too. Although the way my puffers eat, I'm having to actually get some from LFS because they're not breeding fast enough to keep up! Plus I lost some when I was away on vacation for a week and didn't feed the tank.

Really great shots. They are so cute.

the shell looks see-thru that is soo cool.
