What kind of strange water do I have?

I wont even specualate what diseases, if it is diseases, w/o Vid/Pics/more info. Wondering what the pH/GH/KH of tank was right before/after wc as well as tap water?

Well it seems to me that bottom dwellers often get hit harder than others in this tank. I've gone through a fair number of clown plecs, cories and botia in the past. And if it is a disease, it progresses amazingly quick. Usually fatal within a day or two. One day they'll look ok. The next day they'll look like this:

And the day after that they're done for.

Sorry about the crappy photos but I only had my phone w/me at the time. But basically there's a milky white film starting to form over the eyes and while the body seems ok in the photo, the fins and head are getting covered w/some flaky white substance.

I don't have any photos of the neons or gouramis since it's tough to get a good shot of their fins.

does it happen instantly after the water change? I'd take water from the tap and let it sit out overnight then take the pH again to make sure that it's not changing as it sits.

I think it does. Usually by the next day after a change I can see that something's wrong.

BTW, antibiotics kill off nitrifying bacteria too, right? Cause I just tested my water and ammonia was now at .5. Still no nitrite or nitrate.

Also, how sensitive are fish to temperature changes? Cause when I do a 50% change the water temp drops from 78F to around 71-72. Is that too much of a drop?

What's the pH of the water in the tank. I can't say that pH is the issue, but eliminating what it's not will help narrow down to what it is.

pH unlikely to be an issue; pH shock is largely a myth, albeit a hugely pervasive one. Unless the incoming water is much harder or softer it's to all intents and purposes a non-issue.

Temperature drop of potentially 7F - that's about 4 degrees in real money isn't it? That's a bit large.

Right now PH is 6. At least I think it is, the test kit I have doesn't go below 6. Tap water is 7. I think the difference is because I used a water softener pillow right after my last 50% change.

Ach. Those things are worse than useless; they lower hardness but raise TDS which isn't what you want. I'd get shut on it. Besides which, it doesn't exactly sound like your water needs softening.

Well I thought it needed softening cause I can't get a GH reading on my tank water. But yeah I removed them right away when I noticed that the PH was so low.

What are you using to de-chlorinate??
