What kind of turtle is this?

We will release him later today. I was only worried about him being eaten by predators but definitely mother nature will be better for him than a 10g tank with my 4 year old daughter wanting to constantly pull him out of the tank.

Yes, unfortunately handling is very stressful for turtles, and many reptiles in general.

It is taking a chance in the wild, but that is the way it is meant to be. Not to mention that there is a chance of salmonella poisoning. Wild turtles are better left wild.

Cute little Midland/Eastern (Intergrade) Painted Turtle. I'm glad to hear you're releasing it back where you found it. It's probably heading toward the closest body of water.

These guys actually do make good pets if you can give them all their required needs. But I would still buy a captive bred turtle over a wild caught. Baby turtles are not the easiest things to raise in captivity. Most are very delicate and you have to be dedicated to all their requirements at this age. A captive bred turtle is raised on pellets from the start. It can be difficult to get wild caught turtles to switch over to a prepared/pellet food.

I would let him go, in as near to the exact same spot as you found him as possible. If you want a pet turtle, buy a Stinkpot, that only gets a few inches big, from a captive breeder. They run about $15.

What kind of tank would this turtle need? I've never seen one before, but might want one in the future.

I'm glad you're letting him go, maybe you can drop him off near a pond.

In addition to what everyone else said, I would like to add that IMO turtles don't make great pets - for health reasons. They carry salmonella, and you've got to be extremely careful about washing your hands after handling them/cleaning their tank/etc. It's easy to get sloppy and too laid back after a period of time.

I had turtles for a few years, and I got salmonella from them. I can't even begin to describe to you how sick I was.

that's even cuter than the turtle ^_^
